Having your cat examined by a vet that works exclusively with cats makes sense – they are focused on feline health and are very aware of the subtle ways a cat shows signs of illness (or how they cover the signs of illness).

Cats are independent animals that like to be in control. Cats need to be handled gently and with respect and care. We understand that cats are special and there are unique difficulties in bringing a cat to a veterinary clinic. We know that cats often do not travel well and feel unsafe away from their home; they are sensitive to new sights, sounds and smells. Most cats prefer quiet and solitude.

At Just for Cats appointments are scheduled to allow time to examine cats at their (the cats) leisure. Often it takes 10-15 minutes just for the cat to settle down and start to relax enough to be examined without stress and we factor this in to the times allowed for a consultation.

Safely transporting your Cat to our Clinic

We want your cat to arrive with a minimum of stress and safe transport is essential. Choose a good robust carrier to bring your cat to the clinic. Familiar smells will make your cat less stressed so put clothing that smells of home in the carrier. Try using the carrier at home for your cat sleep in, so it does not only “appear” when there is a vet visit! In the car, covering the carrier with a towel during the journey may help to keep the cat calm.

Specific calming scents e.g. Feliway are useful. Spray the carrier with Feliway®, 30 minutes before placing the cat in the carrier.

If your cat panics, wrap him/her in a thick blanket and put both in the carrier. Take spare bedding (smelling of home) in case the cat soils the carrier.
